Does custom painting your electric guitar change the sound?

No. Purists will argue otherwise. They'll tell you that applying extra paint and finish will change the way the instrument resonates and alter its tonality. Some people go so far as to remove the finish, saying that lets the wood breathe and ring more freely. But a new paint job won't change anything to such an extent that its sound will change to any noticeable extent. You can repaint your axe or cover it with stickers to your heart's content. The only thing that will really affect its sound is your technique, your amp, your effects, the pickups, and construction of the guitar itself (probably in that order.)
