The Steep Canyon Rangers have carved out a special spot in the world of bluegrass music, creating a sound that looks forward and backwards at the same time. First formed in the stairwells and kitchens of Chapel Hill, NC, the Rangers arrive from varied musical backgrounds. On stage and in the studio, Woody Platt, Mike Guggino, Charles Humphrey, Nicky Sanders, and Graham Sharp have perfected their ensemble approach using fierce dynamics and seamless harmonies. The Rangers base their sound around a stunning catalogue of original songs, drawing on the sounds of early bluegrass, honky tonk, and blues.
Here is a brief excerpt from an article from the Bluegrass Now June 2006 article and what they had to say about Lou Reid & Carolina; "Picture yourself at your favorite bluegrass festival, on the prettiest day of the year, listening to group after group performing songs that keep you in a perpetual state of bliss. Suddenly you realize, one of those musicians seems to have been in three different bands and you wonder, can this be right? Well, actually, it could be, if the musician happened to be Lou Reid, who currently fronts his own band, Lou Reid and Carolina, and is also an active member of the legendary Seldom Scene and the star-studded ensemble, Longview."
Skaggs Family Records' newest sensation, Cadillac Sky, forges a powerful sound with rich lead singing, engaging composing, whip-crack instrumental precision, soulful harmonies, and an attention to arranging that dazzles. C-Sky's music transcends genre and generation. It's revolutionary! Cadillac Sky has also appeared on Country Music Television's "Loaded".
The Kenny and Amanda Smith Band
Winners of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s prestigious Emerging Artist of the Year award in 2003, the Kenny and Amanda Smith Band combines gutsy, heartfelt vocals, brilliant instrumental talents and a powerful, contemporary sense of song choice and arrangement into one of the most compelling new sounds in bluegrass today. Born of the intensely personal musical and romantic connection between Kenny and Amanda Smith, the band shares an all-too rare sense of intimacy and cohesion where each musician feels an almost telepathic connection. Musicians call it being in the groove, where the group collectively accents each beat in precisely the same way. Whatever it’s called, this band has it in spades.
Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain's self titled album has jumped up the Bluegrass Unlimited's top album chart for march to #5. C.J. Snow a Country and Bluegrass player for Borders Group, Inc had the following comments regarding Carrie Hassler and Hard Rain's latest CD Release "• "Once or twice a year I come across a CD from new artists that simply blows me away. Carrie Hassler & Hard Rain have done it with their debut self-titled effort. Backed by an extremely talented group of young players, Carrie, who has been gifted with a voice that produces a rich and powerful vocal performance, and Hard Rain have a very bright future."
