If you have decided that the obvious benefits of satellite TV are right for you, you'll need to know what you need in order to receive satellite TV signals at your home. Thankfully, there are very few requirements that you need to meet in order to take advantage of the most beneficial TV packages available today. What is needed? Do you have to install anything on your own? No, you won't have to install the dish on your own, or run the coaxial cable, unless you want to. Professional installation will take care of that. However, there are still a few requirements that must be met.
Dish Location – The location of your satellite dish is of the utmost importance. The satellites that broadcast your TV signal orbit above the equator, in what is called a geosynchronous orbit (which means that they orbit with planet, rather than around it). Because the satellites are located over the equator, you will need to ensure that the mounting location has a clear view of the southern sky. This is absolutely crucial to your TV enjoyment.
Tall buildings and trees can block the signal, or degrade it considerably. However, there are many places to mount that satellite dish; it need not be attached to the home, even. The roof is a likely spot, but many homeowners choose to have their dish installed in the backyard where there is plenty of room. Your professional installer will find the right spot to put the dish. What if you live in a rented home or in an apartment building? If you rent your home, you will need permission from the property owner to mount the dish anywhere. If you live in an apartment building, check your lease agreement. You may be able to mount the dish outside your apartment (in a south-facing apartment) or even mount it on the roof of the building.
Wiring – The coaxial cable used to connect your receiver to the satellite dish is important. For instance, older coaxial cable will probably need to be replaced. Both major satellite companies require the use of RG-6 coaxial cable. These cables may be preexisting, but during a new installation, your installer will likely have to make a small hole in the floor or wall. If your home is prewired with RG-6, then you have no worries; you can use the existing wiring for your satellite connection.
Are there any other requirements? No, those are the only physical requirements needed to enjoy satellite TV; you will, of course, need to have a place where the receiver can be located. Finally, you will need to choose a provider for satellite TV service. The right provider will offer you access to tremendous entertainment options (though all satellite providers are better than cable, in terms of channel selection). If you want HD programming, you will need to make sure that you have an HD TV in your home and that you choose the appropriate HD package from the satellite provider.
